Referrals

UDA Contracts from April 2013 – Parkway Clinic operates under a UDA contract for the following:

  1. Extractions under Sedation for Adults from the ABMU area (simple extractions, up to 4 teeth)
  2. Extractions under Local Anaesthetic for Adults from the ABMU area

When referring patients for these services, please ensure that the referral forms are completed fully and radiographs are enclosed to support the referral.

Parkway Clinic still have Service Level Agreements to treat children under General Anaesthetic or Sedation from both the ABMU and Hywel Dda areas.

Indications for General Anaesthetic in Paediatric Dentistry

The child may need to have a General Anaesthetic to allow treatment because of the following:-

  • A low coping ability
  • Behaviour management problems
  • Dental fear and anxiety
  • White coat syndrome
  • Mental disorder/psychiatric problems

Clinically a child may need a GA for:-

  • Complex operative procedure
  • A high degree of surgical trauma anticipated
  • Severe pulpitis requiring immediate relief
  • Acute soft tissue swelling requiring removal of the infected tooth/teeth
  • Surgical drainage of an acute infected swelling
  • Single or multiple extraction in a young child unsuitable for conscious sedation
  • Symptomatic teeth in more than one quadrant
  • Moderately traumatic or complex extractions e.g. ankylosed or infra-occluded primary molars, extraction of broken-down permanent molars
  • Teeth requiring surgical removal or exposure
  • Biopsy of a hard or soft tissue lesion
  • Debridement and suturing of orofacial wounds
  • Established allergy to local anaesthesia
  • Post-operative haemorrhage requiring packing and suturing
  • Examination under GA, including radiographs, for a special needs child where clinical evidence exists that there is a dental problem which warrants treatment under GA (with prior agreement from the LHB)

(Guidelines for the use of General Anaesthesia (GA) in Paediatric Dentistry. UK National Guidelines in Paediatric Dentistry 2008)

When to Refer

There will be cases where the need to refer is manifest, but where cases are not so clear, we can advise if you have any doubt whether a referral should be made. The rate of malpractice claims in dentistry and other medical sectors is on the increase and misdiagnosis or failure to refer are among the main reasons such claims are made. We are particularly keen to encourage referral of suspicious lesions or growths and have the expertise to handle diagnosis and treatment of these areas. In all instances, we are happy to discuss the necessity for referral of individual cases.

Testimonial

  • I have had a phobia of dentists for as long as I can remember and thanks to the staff and Mr Gray. I’m no longer afraid. The level of care and treatment I have had is amazing and I can’t thank the reception staff the nurses or Mr Gray enough. I am so grateful. Happy smiles.

  • Had my wisdom tooth extracted today, the staff were all wonderful considering we were actually 25 minutes late due to horrific traffic in Swansea. We were seen quickly and in a professional way, service was efficient, quick and professional! Nice experience!
